Some of my favorite characters are the humble, unassuming ones–who do what’s needed, without caring about whether it’s recognized, because it’s needed and it’s the right thing to do.
They tend to be sidekicks or minor characters. Helpers. Supporters. They don’t mind sharing, or even giving up, the spotlight after it falls on them here or there.
Samwise Gamgee is one of these characters, for sure.
In my own Herezoth, Vane’s Aunt Teena and the League’s Hayden Grissner are this kind of character.
They don’t care about fame or glory, or even acclaim. They do their part, whether big or small, or both at different moments, contributing what they can.
Part of the intrigue of such characters (though this isn’t true of Sam, of whom we know a lot) is that there’s often no need to fill in too much backstory for them when they have a minor role, so as a reader you can fill in the blanks and wonder what possibly might lie in their past.
Is there a character in this mold that you are particularly fond of?
And I will say, without giving out any spoilers, that in The Magic Council: The Fight for Home, you do finally learn something of Teena’s past. She’s a remarkable woman for how unassuming she is!
