“The Magic Council: The Fight for Home” doesn’t follow only one character the way “The Crimson League: The Fight for Hope” follows Kora. It has a more omniscient point of view.
That said, Vane Unsten is definitely the protagonist of book two of the Herezoth trilogy. He’s a sorcerer, the nephew of villain Zalski Forzythe from book one. This is his coming of age story.
(You can read the book’s blurb here).
Knowing me, I don’t know how I considered writing a story with a male MC! It was a real risk for me as an author and took me out of my comfort zone, because I definitely don’t know what it’s like to be a teenage boy. If the characters and plot from book one hadn’t set me up for this scenario, I don’t think I would have tried it, but I’m so glad I did.
When I realized who Vane was, and what options he would have before him in life as he came of age, I knew I had to write his story. The potential was too great to pass up.
Vane is one of my favorite characters in Herezoth. He’s a lot like me in temperament–introverted, melancholic, private about important things, aware of his flaws, and generally risk-averse and preferring to be left alone.
That said, Vane has a sense of adventure and a willingness to stand up for himself that I greatly admire and that make him, I think, courageous in a subtle but very real sense.
He is willing to accept and adapt to what life throws at him, whatever that is. To whatever extent he’s tempted to resent his struggles and the way he’s wronged, he tries not to thrust that on other people.
He doesn’t want to step out and become a public figure as Duke of Ingleton–especially knowing that he’s a sorcerer, that Zalski was his uncle, and all the danger and controversy his joining court as Duke of Ingleton will cause–but he does it because he believes it what he’s meant to do. He sees it is the right thing.
Vane’s awesome. I love him so much. And I can’t wait for others to dive into his story!
