I’m so grateful to be fluent in Spanish. Here are some of my favorite things about being bilingual
- access to new cultures, literature, and art
- I’ve been blessed to be able to spend quite a bit of time in Spain, and Madrid is my happy place
- I happen to LOVE linguistics, and Spanish is my opening to it, especially regarding etymology and connections between Romance languages and English
- linguistic knowledge and “know how” that I’ve utilized in naming people, places, and incantations in my Herezoth trilogy
- working with Spanish keeps my mind fresh
- I’ve been able to teach Spanish to college and high school students, and I’ve done translation into Spanish for evangelization work–all of that is precious to me.
I don’t regret leaving my doctoral program in Spanish lit in 2013 at all, but I am also grateful for the opportunities, knowledge, and experiences that being bilingual has opened to me.
Are you bilingual? What language would you like to learn?
