Reflections on resilience through different phases of life

If there is one constant in life, it is that nothing is constant. We are constantly progressing through one phase of things to another. Sometimes the transition is gradual. Sometimes it happens suddenly. Sometimes we choose it, sometimes we don’t. Sometimes entering a new phase is unavoidable; other times, it’s a deliberate progression on our part that isn’t, strictly speaking, necessary.

One key to life is resilience. We build resilience by living and learning, adjusting when adjustments are needed, and not growing attached to luxuries or non-essential things.

We also build resilience by forgiving ourselves and understanding that we are not our failures. We are not what we do, successful or otherwise.

One of my favorite things about my trilogy is that each installment is its own story, encapsulating its own phase in the lives of the characters.

Times are very hard–even dystopian–in book one, The Crimson League.

In book two, The Magic Council, both Herezoth and my characters are in a more stable, fruitful, calm period (comparatively). This means that, while dealing with the trauma of the past, they are able to work, grow, and start families in a more peaceful environment.

In one respect, my characters live through a very reactive time in book one. In book two, they get to call the shots more and shape their own circumstances. I like that. You get to see who they really are and who they have become.
