Kora’s Kansten is such a fun character. She really comes into her own in book three, but she makes her first real appearance in book two.
In many ways, Kansten is like her namesake from the Crimson League. She’s similarly sarcastic and direct, and can be brash. But she’s also her different. The first Kansten has come from an abusive home, and she has a hardness to her, a pessimism, or maybe a realism, that Kora daughter lacks entirely. Kora’s Kansten is also better educated and, I think, more self-aware.
Given her family background–Kora is a sorceress–Kansten can’t wait to start learning magic when she’s a bit older. Kora always says she has to wait until she turns fifteen.
As a nine-year old, Kansten is full of life and very active. She’ll study and do her lessons, but she prefers more active, athletic activities, like hiking in the woods or fishing with her dad. She grows very close to her father. As the oldest of five, Kansten is a fierce guardian and protector of her siblings (two brothers and two sisters).
Kansten is a minor character in The Magic Council, but she does have something of an arc. Her young life gets thrown for a loop, unexpectedly, forcing her grapple with questions of who she is and who she wants to be at a young age.
