Character Spotlight: Francie the Fearless

Francie Rafe is a really fun character–and pretty complex, I think. She had a rough childhood and carries a lot of guilt, not all of it necessarily her own.

Francie grew up in the northern village of Fontferry and was Vane‘s best friend in childhood, before his Aunt Teena took him to Herezoth’s capital city of Podrar.

I don’t want to say too much about her role in The Magic Council: The Fight for Home, as most of it would be spoilers. But I can say that Francie is very independent, strong-minded, and direct. I admire that about her, because I struggle with those things myself. She’s pretty smart as well, and is more or less self-educated. I wouldn’t call her ambitious, but she’s not afraid to put herself out there, and she’s not afraid to take risks for a good reason.

She became interested in magic, and especially magic politics and how magic is received in society, after discovering that her best friend was a sorcerer. Despite her mother’s disapproval, she read up on magic and thought deeply about its implications and risks in society.

As book two unfolds, she has to make some uncomfortable, difficult, and important decisions that will greatly impact the trajectory her life is going to take. What path will she take?
