“Magic Council” Excerpt: The Prince Who Wasn’t

I’m so excited to share the prologue of The Magic Council: The Fight for Home with you today!

You’ll meet the princes I’ve spotlighted over the last few days. If you enjoy, please share the word about this upcoming release and the first book of the series, which is currently available on Amazon, including for “free” for Kindle Unlimited subscribers.

Here’s the prologue: “The Prince Who Wasn’t.”

King Rexson hadn’t felt this disoriented since the unlooked-for murder, thirteen years before, of the sorcerer who’d killed his parents. He brought his three sons to the queen’s bedchamber, where their mother sat against her headboard, holding a sleeping newborn.

Rexson’s distraction when he’d come for the children had alarmed them, and they still looked wary.

Tall for nine and ten, the older boys had their father’s blond hair and green eyes, although no one knew where the crown prince’s shortsightedness came from.

The youngest—a scrawny seven-year-old with his mother’s thick brown hair and thin nose—whispered, “It’s our new brother.”

“Sister,” the queen corrected. “You three should meet your sister.”

He giggled into his hands, and the crown prince’s jaw dropped.

Neslan, the middle son, frowned at the baby. “It can’t be a girl.”

The king confirmed, “You have a sister.”

Neslan’s confusion was visible. “Father, no girl has been born in our family in two hundred years.”

“Well,” said Rexson, “one was today.” He glanced at the crown prince, who still stared slack-jawed at the baby. “Valkin?” He peered into the boy’s face. “Are you all right?”

Neslan observed, “He’s speechless. I never thought I’d see the day.”

Rexson jabbed Neslan’s shoulder. “That’s a rare event, I know.”

Hune, the youngest boy, approached the queen. She smiled at him, her eyes shining. “Does she have a name?” he asked.

“Melinda,” said the queen. “After my mother.”

Hune glanced back at his brothers. “What do we do with a sister?”

Neslan laughed. “We’ll tell her stories! We’ll teach her lots of things.”

Hune looked to the king, struck by an idea. “How long before she can ride my pony with me?”

Rexson laughed outright. “Quite a while, I’m afraid.”

Shaking his head, the crown prince finally spoke. “We’ll have to protect her, I’d think. There’s no getting around that.” The king clapped him on the back.

I hope you enjoyed this sweet moment. I have BIG plans for Princess Melly in the future, so stayed tuned and make sure to follow the blog to keep up with news from Herezoth.

And mark your calendars for 5/30/24!
