Character Spotlight: August Hincken

August is one my favorite characters that I’ve written about. She comes so far and she grows and learns so much over the course of The Magic Council: The Fight for Home.

I love August on her own, for her own sake. And I love her with Vane. She doubts herself a lot. She tends to ramble a bit when she feels nervous. She lacks confidence in some ways, and she would never consider herself brave.

But truly, she has a will of steel. She stands up to so much through the course of The Magic Council–threats and dangers of various kinds, and she does it willingly, for the sake of other people and for the sake of arriving where she believes she’s meant to be.

August was raised by her grandparents in Yangerton, Herezoth’s biggest city. She likes the big city, but I’d say she comes to like the capital city of Podrar, which is somewhat slower-paced, even more–though she’ll always have a nostalgia for her early childhood.

At the age of thirteen or fourteen, she moves down to the fishing villages to live with her half-sister, Ursa. Ursa is older and quite rich.

August never really feels at home in Carphead with Ursa–especially not after Ursa kidnaps the king’s three sons, which is where the start of The Magic Council finds her.

I had so much fun getting to know August as her story unfolded. She surprised me quite a bit. I love where the story finds her at its end, stepping in a role that a previous character (whom I just adore) used to fill.
