Why I title my chapters

There are two, pretty quick reasons why I title my chapters.

First, I write fantasy, more or less young adult, and for that subgenre of fantasy, lots of writers title their chapters.

Secondly, Tolkien and J.K. Rowling titled their chapters. They are responsible for my love of fantasy literature and for showing me how deep, powerful, and meaningful it can be, how much it can touch the human spirit.

It’s not that I think I’m as good a writer, or will ever leave anything close to the mark they did. It’s a homage of sorts, because they did so much for me.

If my memory serves me right, Lewis also titled chapters in The Chronicles of Narnia, as well. I read him later, but also loved him.

Titling chapters can be one of the most difficult things for me, regarding writing! It’s easy to come with SOMETHING or other, don’t get me wrong, but something good? That’s a different story.

How do you feel about chapter titles?
