The psalm at Mass today is one of my favorites. I have the Grail translation of it memorized thanks to the Divine Office:
O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor haughty my eyes.
I have not gone after things too great, nor marvels beyond me.
Truly I have set my soul in silence in peace.
As a child has rest in its mother’s arms, even so my soul.
O Israel, hope in the Lord, now and forever.
Jesus tells us that unless we become like little children, we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. Part of the key to what He means, I think, is unlocked here in this psalm.
Little children are small and vulnerable, and they recognize this. Truth is the absolute cornerstone of humility.
But little children of good parents are not overly concerned about their weakness and littleness. They know they can depend their parents to provide for, protect, and love them.
Well, we have the absolute BEST of Fathers in God. The psalm today is an invitation to rest in Him, who so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son for us.
It is an invitation to rest in Jesus, who died for us while we were yet sinners, enemies of God.
