There aren’t many books that I’ve stayed up late to finish, but the ones I have include:

• The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
• The Phantom of the Opera
• Harry Potter

The only reason The Lord of the Rings is not on this list is that I saw the movies first, so I knew the basic story when I read them.

Yes, Harry Potter was my introduction to fantasy, as I graduated high school in 2003 and no one in my family (apart from Harry Potter) read or knew much about fantasy. My Dad was more into sci-fi.

I discovered Tolkien through the films freshman year of college, and say Return of the King in theaters for a friend’s birthday that same year.
