Two approaches to blogging

I think, if you want to blog well and regularly, without it being a complete time suck, there are probably two main approaches to blogging.

Each basic approach offers variations and options, of course, within itself. But for the most part, I think bloggers either:

  • Write longer, more thoughtful, more developed pieces two-three times a week (or maybe even once)
  • Write shorter pieces more often–every weekday or even daily

I follow the second approach. I like the consistency and routine of publishing daily. I keep my posts on the shorter side, so they don’t take up all my time after work.

One useful thing to keep in mind, if you adopt the second approach, is that a list format makes for an organized, readable blog post almost always. It’s hard to go wrong with it.

One thing I’ll often do, if I have an idea that could make a longer post, is consider how I can break it down in multiple shorter posts, either a series of them or simply posts with a somewhat related theme or point.

Depending on your schedule, how much traffic you get, what you are blogging about, what you want your blog to do for you, what amount of time on a weekly basis you want and are able to devote to your blog, either approach could work.

I also wouldn’t sneer at publishing smaller posts two or three days a week, either. There’s nothing wrong with that!

Remember that blogging should be enjoyable, and that you can be flexible with it, as well. You should try to publish, I’d think, more or less on a regular schedule of SOME kind (just so that those who follow you know when to expect new content), but you aren’t locked into a particular schedule or particular post format, either.

Give yourself room to experiment, to try new things, and to adjust and change your approach as your blog grows or your life situation changes.

If you blog, how often do you long? How long of a post do you usually shoot for?
