While book two of my trilogy is off with beta readers, I’m going through book three again, and then I need to do some serious work revising the prequel.
I took a week’s break from all of that while I was running my free promo from June 10-June 14, and I didn’t realize the toll not writing had taken until I got back to my trilogy.
Now, my main source of peace is my daily prayer, for sure. But after that, my spirit needs time with my characters. Journeying with them and letting them inspire me is therapeutic in a way. It’s helping me heal from and make sense of some real twist and turns life took a while back.
It provides a needed sense of continuity.
I say that because last weekend, when the promo was over and I got back to going through book three in my trilogy, it felt like arriving home. I felt human again.
I’m sure it didn’t detract from the sense of relief I felt that, as an introvert, I’d found marketing the promo pretty uncomfortable. But even with that, I was surprised what a difference diving back into book three made in my mood.
It elevated my general sense of well-being.
I’m sure other writers could relate! When you’re a writer, you really do need to write, for some reason or other. It’s “written” into who we are. God threw that in there . . . we need to write.
While there are times we authors may need to set writing aside, and if writing time is interfering with personal obligations, especially to family, I’d think we’re doing something wrong, it’s important to remember that it’s not selfish to carve out some amount of writing time for yourself.
