I never used to have multiple WIPs (works in progress) at a time–at least, never for long. When I wrote and published the first editions of the Herezoth trilogy, I did so one book at a time.
But then I took them all down years ago, entered and left religious life, and now I am trying to get them all back out.
- The first installment launched June 15
- The second installment is with a couple of beta readers
- The third installment needs revision based on the comments/work of my editor and proofreader for book one
- I also have a draft of a prequel that is still in content revisions.
I like having multiple WIPs in that I don’t get stuck or burned out on one like I used to from time to time.
There is another one to go to if that happens!
For instance, I’m having trouble figuring out how to change the magic in a scene in the prequel. I crafted a new spell to help make the prequel more exciting in terms of the magical aspect of things. (I write fantasy, after all). But I’ve realized this spell causes continuity errors.
If my sorcerer characters have this spell the whole time, throughout the entire trilogy, there are instances where that spell would be useful. It would certainly be one my protagonist in the first installment would learn.
Basically, I need to figure something else out, and I haven’t been able to as of yet: at least, nothing that feels fun and exciting. So I’m going through book three one more time while I mull this over.
In one sense, it feels like procrastination. But it’s productive procrastination. I used to procrastinate solely by working on my old blog, or on grad school things.
In terms of creative work, though, to be honest, sometimes you just have to sit and let things work themselves out internally. It can be the best thing. At least, that’s how my creative process works.
So, if you’re a writer, do you like having multiple WIPs? Do you stick to one? Why’s that?
Anyway, book one of my trilogy is available on Amazon. It’s a complete story in and of itself (no cliffhanger ending). There are editorial reviews, excerpts, and character spotlights on the blog. Check out the book website here.
